I7-930 PROCESSOR 2.80GHZ 8M CHIPCACHE LGA1366 4.80GT/SEC

Amazon.com Product Description
The Intel Core i7-930 processor combines the power of four 2.80 GHz computing cores into a single processor, guaranteeing enough processing power for the most demanding applications. With 8 MB of smart cache, the Core i7-930 processor ensures that you get maximum responsiveness from your system, even when several intensive programs run simultaneously. Compatible with motherboards based on the Intel X58 Express chipset, the Core i7-930 processor takes your computing and gaming experience to the next level.

Intel Core i7-930 Processor features:
  • Four 2.80 GHz cores for better multitasking and multithreaded performance.
  • 8 MB of smart cache.
  • Integrated memory controller delivers higher memory bandwidth.
  • Quick Path Interconnect provides fast data transfer between the processor and chipset.

With four cores in one processor, users will experience better multitasking and multithreaded performance.

The Intel Core i7-930 processor delivers outstanding performance for demanding tasks. View larger.
Powerful New Microarchitecture Eliminates Slowdown
The i7 family is Intel's flagship processor, and for good reason. With the i7 family, Intel engineers invented a revolutionary new style of microarchitecture. They replaced the front side bus--a longtime staple of processor design--with a new technology called QuickPath Interconnect (QPI). Using QPI, the Intel Core i7-930 processor achieves unprecedented levels of bandwidth, and can use its four computing cores to their maximum potential.

To put it simply, users will enjoy faster and more streamlined processing than ever before. Your computer will handle multiple projects and applications without the slowdown you'd experience with a lesser processor.

Extremely intensive programs like high-definition media editors will run more smoothly and responsively. And you'll be able to experience next-generation games without frame-rate hiccups and slowdowns.

New Technologies Boost Performance
The Intel Core i7-930 processor also makes use of several other cutting-edge technologies:

  • Turbo Boost Technology allows the processor to run up to 133 MHz faster when it's operating below power/thermal limits.
  • Hyper-threading Technology enables more efficient use of processor resources, making the most of highly threaded software like media players and next-generation games.
  • Smart Cache Memory increases available RAM resources, leading to less lag while multi-tasking.
Media Editing and Sharing Easier than Ever
Whether editing high-definition videos, touching up family photos, or splicing up music, the Intel Core i7-960 processor provides the processing power needed. The processor's four cores are optimized to keep up with the most advanced digital editing software. It also accelerates DVD encoding and compression, allowing you to easily share your HD home videos with everyone.

Unparalleled Gaming Performance
With the advent of next-generation games, PC gaming is more immersive than ever. The latest games take advantage of multi-threaded programming, allowing for more realistic graphics, physics, and artificial intelligence (AI). But you need more than just a good graphics card with high GPU output to fully experience all these effects. Underlying the visual realism and advanced AI scripts are thousands of high-speed calculations that your CPU must process.

Fortunately, the Intel Core i7-930 processor is specifically designed to handle these calculations. Using multi-thread architecture, it has the ability to process thousands of graphical characteristics at once, resulting in a smooth and lag-free experience. Intel worked closely with CryTek -- the developers of the advanced game engine behind such games as Crysis and Far Cry -- to guarantee that gamers have an immersive and lifelike experience.

The Intel Core i7-930 processor is backed by a three-year limited warranty.

5 out of 5 stars Great price/performance   April 11, 2010

Processors are pretty much a commodity, what really matters is how much you get for you money. In the i7 line this model currently is in a good spot. Going down one step to a 920 only save $10-20 but going up to a 940 will set you back $250. You can spend $1000 for a top of the line Intel i7 and only see a slight improvement in most Windows applications. The high-end processors are really targeted for servers and not desktops anyway. You can save about $100 and step down to a i5 but you will lose quite a bit of performance. Prices can change from week to week, so be sure and check to see if these numbers are still valid.

The primary difference between the i7 and other processors like the i5, or AMD processors for that matter, is how memory is accessed. The i7 uses triple-channel memory that is accessed directly instead of via external support chips which speeds things up a lot.

Be aware that the latest Intel chips use the LGA1366 socket and the i5 uses LGA1156, so you have a much better upgrade path with the i7 later on. If you build a i7 computer, make sure you chip and motherboard have the same socket!

With any of these processors you really should get a 3rd party heatsink; it will keep you processor cooler making for a more stable and longer living system.

5 out of 5 stars No need to buy the Intel extreme   July 24, 2010

With a decent motherboard, this CPU will run comfortably at 3.8GHz with an air cooler, and at 4.2GHz with better cooling. And it will be rock-solid! It eats through my games and converts or encodes audio and video faster than any CPU I have owned so far. I hear it is being phased out like the i7-920 before it, and will be replaced in this price spot by the i7-950. Although buying the LGA1366 platform is expensive, this is what you purchase if you want the best desktop platform available today.

5 out of 5 stars Runs Great!   May 29, 2010

The i7-930 was purchased for my desktop system. I'm running ubuntu 10-04 with 12gb memory on two monitors. The CPU runs lighting fast with no problems. Re-touching photographs and running other applications make this CPU a complete joy. The price is reasonable for all the benefits you receive.

I chose the 930 because of it's price/performance balance. It can easily be overclocked to 4.0+ GHz and runs cool at stock speed. And the quad-core technology works great with my Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate OS. Go Intel or go home.

5 out of 5 stars Newbies, you can do this!   April 23, 2010

This was my third of 4th build, but I have not done one for many years and things have changed. I was most concerned about installing the processor incorrectly and damaging either it or the MOBO. However, installation was a cinch and the processor does not disappoint. It is just as fast as can be! This build was replacing a computer that was running on a Xeon processor that is not too old, a tall order, but it is faster than the Xeon, at least the one I had in the older computer. Highly recommend.
